In a groundbreaking achievement for youth leadership and the Nigerian diaspora, Princess Opeyemi Bright has been inaugurated as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom.
At just 29, Bright now serves as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, marking a historic moment for both British politics and the global Nigerian community.
Her swearing-in ceremony took place on Friday, May 16, 2025.
“This is nothing short of God’s grace. I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise,” Bright said in her inaugural speech.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright’s ascent reflects not only her personal journey but also the increasing influence of Nigerians in global public service.
Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney between 2006 and 2007, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Bright entered politics early, becoming a councillor at the age of 22. Over the past seven years, she has championed causes such as youth empowerment, social inclusion, and local economic development. Her leadership style is deeply shaped by her upbringing and her commitment to service.
Her election also highlights a broader trend: the rising visibility of Nigerians in politics across the globe. From Kemi Badenoch, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to Chi Onwurah, Labour MP, and across borders to Uzoma Asagwara in Canada and Esther Agbaje in the U.S., Nigerians continue to make their mark on international governance.
Princess Bright’s victory is being celebrated as a symbol of resilience and progress. It challenges narratives about youth disengagement in politics and underscores the significant role women and immigrants play in leadership today.
For many, her success is a call to action for Nigerian leaders: to recognize and engage the diaspora as a strategic asset. By investing in youth leadership and creating pathways for global collaboration, Nigeria can harness the talents of its citizens at home and abroad.
