Reports have emerged that Nigeria’s Super Eagles players taking part in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have threatened not to travel to Marrakech for their next match against Algeria unless all outstanding winning bonuses are paid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
According to journalists covering the bi-annual pan-African game in Morocco, the players are insisting on the settlement of their entitlements before taking part in the fixture.
Players and officials are still waiting for payments, a BBC reporter, Olúwashínà Okeleji said while confirming the development.
He added, “Win bonuses from four matches – VS Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received.”
According to him, the team remains committed to the competition but has drawn a clear line over the unpaid bonuses.
“Squad remain focus but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved,” he stated.
The country’s football governing body, the NFF is yet to respond on the development.
In November, the team also threatened to boycott their World Cup qualifier against Gabon, citing unpaid entitlements from the Nigerian authorities.
Nigerian sports journalist, Pooja, who is with the team in Morocco, confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “BREAKING NEWS: Super Eagles players & officials boycott training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments.”
