Cameroonians will on October 12 file out to vote in the country’s presidential election, a decree signed by President Paul Biya on Friday shows.
The election will decide who will lead the Central African nation for the next seven years.
Candidates interested to lead the cocoa- and oil-producing nation with nearly 30 million population must submit their applications within 10 days after the electoral college is convened.
This is in line with the country’s electoral code.
Biya, who is the world’s oldest serving head of state, came to power more than four decades ago in 1982.
The 92-year-old has, however, not announced if he will seek another term to extend his grip on power.
In 2018, he secured victory with 71.28% of votes cast, official results show.
This was however disputed by the opposition and several independent observers who alleged widespread irregularities.
Biya had in 2008 initiated a constitutional amendment which removed presidential term limits, giving him opportunity to run as many times as possible.
