The Black Stars of Ghana have emerged as the only West African team to qualify so far for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mohammed Kudus sealed the crucial win with a fine finish in the 47th minute, sparking wild celebrations among home fans. The result confirmed Ghana’s top spot in Group I with 25 points from 10 matches, six ahead of Madagascar.
The win marks Ghana’s fifth World Cup qualification and reinforces the country’s status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses. It also sets them apart in the region, with traditional rivals like Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast still battling to secure their places in the global showpiece.
With the qualification, Ghana joins Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco as Africa’s representatives so far for the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana will aim to replicate, and perhaps surpass, their historic 2010 run in South Africa, when they became only the third African side to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
