Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on X, formerly Twitter, that Ghana has agreed to fund Ukrainian drone production, marking a significant step in bilateral defence cooperation. The deal follows a phone call between Zelensky and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, where the two leaders explored deepening ties in technology, agriculture, and regional security.
The agreement has several key takeaways. Ghana will finance Ukrainian drone manufacturing, leveraging Kyiv’s battlefield-tested technology to enhance its own border security and defence capabilities. Plans for a Ukrainian-Ghanaian food logistics hub were discussed to strengthen food supply chains in West Africa. A Ukrainian ministerial delegation will soon visit Ghana to advance the partnership, and Zelensky has extended an invitation for Mahama to visit Ukraine.
This matters for both countries. For Ukraine, the deal expands its defence export market amid the ongoing war with Russia and reinforces its role as a global leader in drone technology. For Ghana, the agreement provides access to advanced military technology to combat regional instability while boosting agricultural infrastructure with Ukrainian expertise.
The talks build on a March 2025 meeting between Ukrainian and Ghanaian foreign ministers in New Delhi, where they laid the groundwork for enhanced trade and security cooperation.
