Italian football authorities have handed a two-month ban on Udinese and Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye after he was reportedly found guilty of illegal betting connected to a Serie A match.
The incident according to reports in Italy, happened during Udinese’s 2‑1 victory over Lazio on March 11, 2024, when Okoye deliberately received a yellow card in the 63rd minute—an act linked to suspicious betting patterns flagged by authorities.
Ban Effect
The ban begins with Udinese’s Coppa Italia fixture against Carrarese on August 18, 2025, and stretches into the new Serie A season, causing him to miss six league matches before potentially returning around October 19, 2025.
Authorities raised concerns after detecting a spike in betting activity predicting a yellow card for the goalkeeper.
Winning Odd That Boomeranged
The bets, mostly placed at odds of 8/1 from the Udinese region, reportedly generated over €120,000 in winnings.
Subsequently, Okoye and three alleged accomplices were investigated, with the case reaching Italy’s disciplinary commission in June 2025.
Although initial fears suggested the goalkeeper might face a sporting fraud charge, the commission eventually ruled on the lesser offence of illegal betting.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper, who has earned 18 international caps for Nigeria, joined Udinese in 2023 from English club Watford.
