Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has applauded the youngest serving mayor in the United Kingdom, Nigerian-born Princess Opeyemi Bright, for her trailblazing leadership, and steadfast commitment to promoting positive Nigerian values abroad.
Dabiri-Erewa made this remark on Wednesday during a visit by the 28-year-old Mayor to her official residence in the London Borough of Barking, noting that Mayor Bright’s commitment to community-focused governance is both inspiring and widely recognised.
Describing Mayor Bright as “a shining symbol of hope” for the younger generation of Nigerians in the diaspora, the NiDCOM boss said her accomplishments are a beacon of excellence, service, and integrity.
“This is exactly what we mean when we say the Nigerian diaspora is a force for good. Princess Bright represents the best of what our youth can become when given the platform to lead. Her story reflects the values of hard work, dedication, and resilience, and we are immensely proud of her achievements,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She noted that NiDCOM remains committed to empowering young Nigerians abroad and building stronger global connections through initiatives that foster inclusion, innovation, and leadership development.
The visit, she said, is part of NiDCOM’s broader mandate to connect with the Nigerian diaspora and amplify success stories that reflect positively on the country.
In her remarks, Princess Bright expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the recognition from NiDCOM, sharing that her journey in public service began over two decades ago, influenced by her mother’s passion for grassroots activism. That early exposure, she said, helped shape her commitment to community development and public engagement.
“I am proud to be British-Nigerian and even more proud to serve my community while honouring my roots. This visit is incredibly meaningful to me, and I am thankful for Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s leadership and encouragement. Together, we can create platforms that inspire a new generation of changemakers,” she said.
The Mayor pledged to continue facilitating opportunities for Nigerians living in the United Kingdom and to strengthen the social, cultural, and economic ties between Nigeria and the UK. She also reaffirmed her desire to see more young Nigerians in the diaspora rise to positions of influence.
Bright further emphasised the need to bridge generational and geographical divides between Nigeria and its diaspora communities, calling on young people both at home and abroad to channel their skills and potential into building inclusive, progressive societies.
“I want young people to know that they don’t have to abandon their heritage to succeed. They can lead, thrive, and make a difference wherever they are. The future belongs to them.”
