The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Ghana as the West African nation marks its 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the strong diplomatic and historical ties between both countries.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed the message in a statement on Thursday, extending warm felicitations to his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the people of Ghana on the historic milestone.
Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to secure freedom from colonial rule, an event widely regarded as a turning point in Africa’s liberation struggle.
The Nigerian government noted that Ghana’s independence inspired many African nations, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty, dignity and self-determination.
According to the statement, Nigeria joins Ghanaians in celebrating the milestone and recognising the country’s enduring contributions to democratic governance, regional integration and peaceful development across the African continent.
The ministry highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two nations, describing it as one built on shared historical experiences, cultural ties and common aspirations for peace, prosperity and African unity.
Nigeria and Ghana have remained key partners within regional and international organisations, including the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the United Nations, where both countries have worked closely to advance regional cooperation and stability.
Over the years, both nations have strengthened diplomatic engagement through high-level consultations and cooperation in sectors such as trade, education, energy, defence, migration management and cultural exchange.
The Nigerian government also commended Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and supporting peacekeeping and mediation efforts across West Africa.
As Ghana commemorates its independence this year under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” Nigeria praised the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and democratic institutions.
The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, stronger diplomatic engagement and enhanced cultural and educational exchanges aimed at promoting regional prosperity and African unity.
