Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy to support national development and strengthen participation in global nuclear governance.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, reaffirmed the position while receiving the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, NAEC, Anthony Ekedegwa, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
During the meeting, Tuggar highlighted the strategic role of nuclear technology in global discussions on energy security, technological advancement and international peace.
He stressed the importance of stronger collaboration between the Ministry and the Commission to enhance Nigeria’s engagement in international nuclear diplomacy, particularly within the United Nations system.
Earlier, Ekedegwa briefed the Minister on the Commission’s activities and emphasised Nigeria’s continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, water resource management and industrial development.
Both sides also discussed Nigeria’s long-term interest in developing nuclear power infrastructure to diversify the country’s energy mix and support sustainable economic growth, while maintaining international safety and non-proliferation standards.
