Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior has begun reviewing 170 applications from foreigners hoping to become citizens of the country.
Speaking at a review meeting of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship in Abuja, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the process would be guided by integrity and transparency.
He explained that Nigerian citizenship is not a right but a privilege for people of proven character and integrity. “Our promise stands. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our government will continue to do everything possible to make Nigeria a prosperous nation and a destination of choice for all,” he said.
The minister added that the committee, which he chairs, is responsible for reviewing and recommending applications to the President for approval. “Before us for consideration are 170 applications from foreigners across the globe,” he said.
Members of the committee, he noted, include officials from the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Immigration Service.
Tunji-Ojo assured that every application would be thoroughly examined before submission to the President, adding that the process would leave no room for compromise.
He urged the committee to be firm and fair in ensuring that only individuals with unquestionable character are recommended for citizenship.
The minister also highlighted the importance of legal migration, warning against any attempt to secure citizenship through fraudulent or illegal means.
Reiterating the goals of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, he said the exercise reflects the government’s commitment to promoting national integrity, security, and prosperity.
“Citizenship cannot and will not be granted to individuals who pose potential security threats,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “We must ensure that only the most deserving applicants are approved, in the best interest of our nation.”
