The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a security advisory to Nigerians residing in or travelling across the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military confrontations in the Middle East involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.
The advisory was contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said authorities in Abuja are closely monitoring the rapidly evolving security situation after reported military strikes on Iranian targets and subsequent retaliatory actions affecting parts of the Gulf region.
According to the ministry, the growing tensions have heightened security risks across the region, prompting urgent guidance aimed at safeguarding Nigerian citizens abroad. Nigerians in affected countries were urged to exercise extreme vigilance and remain conscious of their surroundings, particularly by avoiding strategic locations such as military bases, government facilities, and other sensitive installations that could become flashpoints.
The government further advised citizens to limit non-essential movement until the situation stabilises, warning against participation in large gatherings, protests, or public demonstrations that could expose them to danger amid the volatile environment.
In addition, Nigerians were encouraged to strictly comply with security directives issued by local authorities, stressing that cooperation with host-country law enforcement agencies remains critical to ensuring personal safety during periods of heightened tension.
The ministry also called on citizens to rely only on credible information sources and official communication channels for updates, cautioning against misinformation capable of causing panic or confusion.
To strengthen support for Nigerians in the region, the Federal Government disclosed that its embassy in Tehran, alongside diplomatic missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, has been placed on high alert to provide consular assistance and facilitate communication with affected citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it would continue to assess developments and provide timely updates as necessary, reiterating that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority of the government.
Nigeria also appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to pursue de-escalation through dialogue and diplomatic engagement, emphasising the need for renewed negotiations in the interest of global peace, stability, and coexistence.
