Pope Leo XIV has called on the international community to step up efforts to end the war in Ukraine, while urging prayers for peace in all regions affected by conflict, including the Middle East.
Addressing worshippers after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, the pontiff said Ukraine continues to endure “relentless attacks,” leaving civilians vulnerable to severe winter conditions, according to Vatican News.
“Even in these days, Ukraine continues to be struck by relentless attacks, leaving entire populations exposed to the cold of winter,” the pope said.
He expressed deep sorrow over the situation, adding that he remains close in spirit to those suffering and continues to pray for them. Pope Leo XIV warned that the prolonged conflict is having increasingly devastating consequences for civilians, deepening divisions among peoples and pushing the prospect of a just and lasting peace further out of reach.
“I urge everyone to intensify their efforts to end the war,” he said.
The pope’s remarks come ahead of expected face-to-face talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi, facilitated by the United States. Reports indicate that a second round of US-brokered negotiations may take place next weekend.
Pope Leo XIV also appealed to individuals and communities to become agents of peace in their daily lives, calling on people to reject violence in words and in actions and to promote peace at home, at school, in sports, everywhere.
