Qatar has confirmed a significant military confrontation with Iran after its air force shot down two Iranian Su-24 fighter jets and intercepted multiple aerial threats targeting its territory, marking a sharp escalation in the widening Middle East conflict.
In a statement released by Qatar’s Ministry of Defense on Monday, the country said its armed forces successfully neutralised seven ballistic missiles and five drones launched from Iran, destroying all threats before they reached designated targets.
According to the ministry, the defensive operation was carried out using integrated air defence systems and fighter jet patrols deployed to protect national airspace.
Some international media reports that the Qatari military described the interceptions as a necessary response to hostile actions targeting civilian and strategic infrastructure, including sensitive facilities within the country.
Officials stressed that the security situation remains under control and no casualties were immediately reported.
The latest confrontation comes amid a broader wave of Iranian missile and drone strikes across the Gulf region, with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates also reporting aerial attacks and interceptions.
Meanwhile, regional leaders have increasingly condemned Tehran’s actions, warning that continued strikes risk dragging the entire Middle East into a wider conflict.
Security analysts say Qatar’s decision to actively engage Iranian aircraft marks a notable shift from its traditionally cautious diplomatic posture, potentially aligning Doha more closely with Gulf allies responding militarily to Iranian aggression.
However, authorities in Qatar have urged residents to remain calm and rely on official communication channels, while defence forces remain on heightened alert amid fears of further retaliation.
