Bayelsa United, Nigeria’s representative at the ongoing 2022 Women’s Champions League on Monday October 31, 2022 lost their opening group B game 1-2 against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in Marrakesh Morocco.
Sundowns are the defending Champions of the competition.
Despite being the underdogs, the Prosperity Girls as the Nigerian side are known as, dominated play in the game but were let down by several wastages in front of goal.
Talking about how it all panned out, Lelona Daweti opened scoring for the South Africans with a stunning strike a minute after the hour mark.
Bayelsa Queens tried to get back into the game but couldn’t find a way past the Sundowns defence before the break.
The Nigerian club coached by Domo Okara conceded again in the 57th minute with Daweti scoring her second of the game for Sundowns.
Mary-Magdalene Anjor reduced the deficit for Bayelsa Queens 10 minutes from time, however, Sundowns held on to win the game despite late pressure from the Nigerians.
Bayelsa Queens, Nigerian Champions will take on TP Mazembe of Congo Democratic Republic in their next game on Thursday November, 3, 2022.
