The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo has warned that violence is not the solution to the crisis arising from protests against police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.
The president who confirmed he had spoken with his Nigerian counterpart, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) over the recent uproar, reasoned dialogue as a solution to the EndSARS crises.
It would be recalled that, both presidents met in Nigeria last month, to resolve a diplomatic row between the two West African countries.
Akufo-Addo tweeted, “I join all well-meaning persons in calling for calm, and the use of dialogue in resolving the #EndSARS impasse in Nigeria. I have spoken with President Buhari, who is committed to this end, and has begun the processes that will lead to reform.
“Violence, be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution. To the families who have lost their loved ones, I express my sincere condolences, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery” he said.
In spite of the governments’ decision to disband the controversial unit of the Nigeria Police Force over alleged involvement in extra-judicial killings, the protest persisted for two weeks as protesters further demanded an overhaul of the country’s security.
Other attacks seemed to have surfaced after some military officers shot at peaceful protesters who gathered at Lekki tollgate to protest against police brutality despite the imposed curfew.
No fewer than 11 persons were reportedly killed in the Lekki shootings.
