Embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has lost his position as the Head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) following IGP Usman Baba’s decision to appoint DCP Tunji Disu as his replacement on Monday, August 2, 2021.
Force spokesman, Frank Mba announced Disu’s posting in a statement on Monday.
According to him the force took the decision to “refocus the IRT for better service delivery.”
He said the IGP charged the new Head of the IRT to demonstrate his professional competence in his leadership of the Unit.
Mba also assured citizens that the IRT will remain focused in the discharge of its duties in line with national statutes and international best practices.
It was revealed last week that Kyari is wanted in the United States of America over his alleged link to Ramon Abbas, alias Ray Hushpuppi, an internet fraudster who has pleaded guilty to scams resulting in millions of dollars in losses.
The celebrated police officer was indicted in a conspiracy to fraudulently obtain and launder money in partnership with the suspected fraudster who was arrested in Dubai last year.
The revelations led to Kyari’s suspension amid internal investigations to be conducted by the Police Service Commission, and calls for him to be extradited to the U.S.

Disu was formerly Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos State.
He was also the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Disu previously served at the State CID, Rivers State as the Deputy Head of the Unit.
He was also a former Commander of the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union (AU) Peace Keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan.
Disu holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Lagos State University (LASU) and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.
He attended several professional courses including Small Arms Smuggling Training in Botswana; Internet Fraud Training at the Cambridge University, UK; Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos; Forensic Investigations and Criminal Intelligence Course at the University of Lagos, amongst others.
Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and Chattered Institute of Personnel Management, among others.
