Nigeria on Monday night held on to a nervy 1-0 win over Guinea to progres to the next round of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The country’s senior national men team known as the Super Eagles took the lead on the 36th minute after Guinea-Bissau’s Sangante kicked the ball into his own net.
After then, both sides made efforts to score but didn’t yield any fruit.
With the result, Ngeria finished as runners-up in the group behind Equatorial Guinea with better goal difference.
Nigeria and Equitorial Guinea finished on seven points apiece after they played three matches, amassed two victories and one draw.
Incidentally, the draw came when they played each other in the opening group A match in Abidjan on January, 14, 2024.
Thereafter, Nigeria went on to beat Cote d’ivoire and now Guinea, while Equitorial Guinea side hammered Guinea 4-2 and host 4-0.
In other words, Cote d’Ivoire have not been able to confirm their place in the knockout due to two back-to-back defeats after they started the tournament with victory over Guinea on January 13.
