The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff has begun a critical review of pledges for the ECOWAS Standby Force and Counterterrorist Brigade, a move aimed at enhancing regional security.
The announcement was made by General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff on Tuesday, during the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the committee in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
General Musa emphasized the need for a unified, cross-border approach to tackle the region’s growing security challenges, calling for collaboration and collective intelligence to address both the root causes and symptoms of insecurity. “The complexity of the security landscape demands that we leverage our collective expertise,” he stated.
The review is poised to fortify the region’s security framework and improve the readiness of ECOWAS member states to counter emerging threats. In addition to the key focus areas of the Standby Force and Counterterrorist Brigade, the meeting will tackle crucial issues like maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and the rotation of peace support operation staff.
General Musa expressed confidence in the outcomes of the meeting, saying, “Together, we will build a safer and more prosperous future for our people.”
