A Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Katsina United and Barau Football Club was abruptly halted on Saturday after a Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, was viciously attacked by enraged home fans.
The incident occurred moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu netted a 69th-minute equaliser, bringing the scoreline to 1-1, a development that provoked fury among sections of the Katsina United supporters.
Abraham, who had played a crucial role in the build-up to the goal, was reportedly chased and assaulted on the pitch, suffering a deep cut to his neck. A disturbing photo from the incident seen by Heritage Times HT shows the player bleeding profusely as teammates and officials struggled to stem the flow of blood.
Barau FC confirmed the attack via a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, announcing the temporary suspension of the match. The club wrote: “70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC”.
Security operatives were later deployed to the scene to restore order and ensure the safety of players and officials. As of the time of filing this report, neither Katsina United nor NPFL management had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The attack has reignited public outrage over the persistent menace of fan violence in Nigerian football stadiums.
Barely a month ago, the NPFL sanctioned Kano Pillars with a ₦9.5 million fine, a three-point deduction, and the closure of the Sani Abacha Stadium following a violent pitch invasion during a match against Shooting Stars of Ibadan.
Football stakeholders have since renewed calls for stiffer penalties and enhanced security measures to curb the growing wave of hooliganism threatening the integrity and safety of the domestic league.
