The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the governments and peoples of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Melissa, which has left a trail of destruction, flooding, and loss of lives across the Caribbean region.
This was contained in a statement on Sunday signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who noted that Nigeria stands firmly with the affected nations in their moment of grief and recovery.
The statement described the situation as “deeply distressing,” emphasizing Nigeria’s empathy with the victims and its shared sense of humanity with the Caribbean nations impacted by the natural disaster.
According to the Ministry, the Nigerian government commends the swift and courageous response of emergency and rescue teams in the three countries, who have been working under extremely difficult conditions to save lives and deliver aid to affected communities. The statement also urged global partners, development agencies, and humanitarian organizations to mobilize resources and provide urgent support to Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica as they confront the aftermath of the catastrophe.
“In the spirit of South-South cooperation and long-standing friendship, Nigeria extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement read.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the governments and people of these resilient nations as they rebuild and restore hope after this tragic event,” the statement added.
