The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has disclosed that Nigeria has the highest number of students from Africa enrolled in US universities.
Mills made the disclosure during the 23rd Annual EducationUSA College Fair held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Citing recent figures, Mills pointed out that over 17,600 Nigerian students were studying at more than 970 US institutions last year, with Texas being the most favoured state.
He expressed his delight, saying, “It’s great to witness the growing enthusiasm among Nigerians who are thinking about studying in the US.”
“The US has more students from Nigeria than any other African nation.”
“Recent data reveals that over 17,600 Nigerian students attended over 970 institutions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia last year. And if you’re curious about the most popular state, it’s Texas!”
The ambassador also emphasized the value of the EducationUSA College Fair as a platform for prospective students to learn about educational options and explore potential career paths.
He noted that the event has significantly increased the number of Nigerian students applying to US universities and has also led to a boost in financial aid opportunities.
“Our yearly College Fairs have led to a significant increase in the number of qualified applicants to US institutions and have also increased financial aid and scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students.”
“Last year, students advised by EducationUSA Nigeria received over $30 million (47.7 billion naira) in financial aid, scholarships, and assistantships, with 73 students supported through the Opportunity Funds Programme in Abuja and Lagos,” Mills further stated.
Mills stressed the crucial role of education in fostering economic growth, improving health outcomes, promoting gender equality, and underscored that a thriving Nigeria is mutually beneficial for both countries.
“Quality education is vital for equitable economic development, better health outcomes, and advancing gender equality.”
“A prosperous and stable Nigeria is in the best interests of both Nigeria and the United States, and education is the foundation for that,” he concluded.
