The Nigerian Government has refuted viral claims suggesting that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, Iran, has shut down operations and abandoned its citizens amid rising tensions linked to the Israel-Iran crisis.
According to a statement on Saturday signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the reports circulating across social media and some online platforms are “misleading and unfounded.”
The Ministry categorically stated that the Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran remains open and fully committed to the safety and welfare of all Nigerian nationals in the country. It explained that while the continuous bombing in Tehran has affected normal work schedules, embassy staff have adapted by working remotely.
“The Embassy is actively engaging with the Government of Armenia to facilitate access for the evacuation of Nigerians via Yerevan,” the statement revealed.
Nigerians currently in Iran and in need of assistance are urged to reach out to the Embassy through its official emergency contacts: Mr. Esson Anzaku on +989393216872 and Abutalib on +989024199018 or via email at [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected].
The Ministry also advised members of the Nigerian community in Iran to maintain contact with their designated community coordinators in the various locations previously outlined by the Embassy. Additionally, citizens have been encouraged to download and join the Iranian local messaging app, eitaa, where a dedicated Nigerian group has been set up for real-time updates and important information.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it remains vigilant in monitoring developments and will continue to implement all necessary measures to protect the interests of Nigerians around the world.
