Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar is expected to publicly call on Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer to stand down, amid mounting frustration over the party’s faltering fortunes in Scotland.
Sarwar is due to make the call at a hastily arranged press conference in Glasgow, sources say, after concluding that Starmer’s repeated political missteps have significantly undermined Labour’s standing north of the border ahead of the crucial Scottish parliament elections in May.
Insiders describe Sarwar as deeply angered by what he sees as avoidable errors by the prime minister, which have eroded voter confidence and blunted Labour’s campaign momentum at a critical moment.
Recent opinion polls place Scottish Labour in third position, trailing behind the Scottish National Party and Reform.
The intervention marks a dramatic escalation in internal Labour tensions, with Sarwar reportedly convinced that a change in leadership at the top is necessary to prevent further electoral damage in Scotland.
The move also underscores growing unease within the party over Starmer’s grip on authority, following a series of high-profile resignations and internal disputes.
More details are expected to emerge following the Glasgow announcement.
