Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, announced on Tuesday that the platform will soon introduce voice and video chat features.
Musk tweeted, “Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform,” emphasizing the convenience of being able to communicate globally without sharing phone numbers.
In a follow-up tweet, Musk expressed skepticism about the trustworthiness of Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service.
The addition of messaging capabilities on Twitter would put the platform in direct competition with popular messaging services such as Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp, all of which offer free communication services.
Musk also revealed that Twitter will begin encrypting direct messages, enhancing user privacy by scrambling message contents.
Since acquiring Twitter for $44 billion in a late 2022 purchase, Musk has made spontaneous changes to the platform, occasionally causing confusion among users.
He has previously mentioned his vision of developing a comprehensive “X” application that integrates messaging, payments, and more.
Musk recently restructured the company, incorporating it into an “X” shell corporation while retaining the Twitter name for the service.
