The Ugandan military has issued a strong warning against the spread of misinformation related to national security.
At the launch of the “Dismis” campaign at Next Media Park, Col. Deo Akiiki, Deputy Defence Spokesperson, emphasized the risks of fake news targeting the military.
“If you are spreading fake news, you can afford to do it elsewhere, but not with the military, as we are responsible for the security of this country,” Col. Akiiki noted.
Lamenting on the potential damage that misinformation can cause to Uganda’s security and stability Col Akiiki stated that the implications of misinformation are better imagined and could affect the stability of Uganda.
The military’s warning comes in response to the growing prevalence of fake news on digital platforms, which can quickly spread and confuse the public. While freedom of speech is upheld, Col. Akiiki made it clear that those who intentionally mislead the public about military activities will face consequences.
Heritage Times HT notes that this move emphasizes the military’s commitment to preserving national security and combating attempts to erode public trust through misinformation, as digital media’s influence continues to grow.
