Egypt is set to host the Bright Star 2025 multinational military exercises from August 28 to September 10, with participation from 43 countries, making it one of the largest defense drills in the Middle East.
According to a statement on Monday by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on the social media platform X, American forces will join the Egyptian Armed Forces and allied nations at the Mohamed Naguib Military Base for the biennial event. The drills, CENTCOM noted, are designed to “build on the strategic security relationship between Egypt and the United States.”
Egyptian army spokesperson Col. Gharib Abdel Hafez confirmed in a video briefing that 13 nations will participate directly with over 7,900 troops, while 30 others will attend as observers. The exercises will involve naval, ground, air, and special forces operations, underlining their scale and complexity.
A Longstanding Defense Partnership
Bright Star is recognized as one of the world’s largest multinational military exercises. It was first held in 1980, following the Egypt–Israel peace treaty, and became a regular biennial event from 1981. Over the years, participation has steadily grown, reflecting both Egypt’s and the U.S.’s roles in fostering regional and international military cooperation.
In recent editions, the scale has expanded significantly. The 2018 drills brought together nine participating nations and 16 observers. In 2021, after a one-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exercises resumed with 21 nations. The most recent edition in 2023 recorded 34 participating countries, underscoring its rising global relevance.
Strategic Timing Amid Regional Tensions
This year’s exercise takes place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has killed nearly 62,700 Palestinians, according to humanitarian reports, and left the enclave devastated and on the brink of famine.
Israel has announced plans to occupy Gaza City as part of a wider strategy to reassert control over the entire Gaza Strip, which borders Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. These developments have intensified international scrutiny, with the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Looking Ahead
For Egypt and the U.S., Bright Star 2025 serves not only as a demonstration of military capability but also as a platform to enhance interoperability among participating nations. The drills highlight the importance of coalition-building in addressing shared security threats, from counterterrorism to maritime safety in the region.
As more nations join the exercise, whether as active participants or observers, Bright Star continues to strengthen its reputation as a cornerstone of international military cooperation, even as regional conflicts add layers of urgency and complexity to its significance.
