Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of their 21-month-old son.
According to reports, one of the couple’s twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi, passed away on Wednesday, after a brief illness. The news has sparked an outpouring of condolences from readers, colleagues, and admirers across Nigeria and beyond, many describing the loss as deeply painful and unimaginable.
The passing of Adichie’s son adds to a series of tragic losses experienced by notable Nigerian families in recent years, underscoring the profound grief that accompanies the death of a child.
In 2025, veteran Yoruba actress Peju Ogunmola and her husband, Omobolanle Sunday, lost their only child, Ayomikun. In a statement released through the family’s spokesperson, it was disclosed that Ayomikun died after a brief illness in Ibadan. He was subsequently laid to rest in a private burial ceremony.
Similarly, in 2024, Nollywood actor Francis Duru announced the death of his son, Ifeanyi. In an emotional tribute, Duru described his son as a lion who fought bravely for his life. While expressing deep pain and confusion, the actor stated that he had accepted the loss as God’s will, even as he admitted to still grappling with the questions that followed such a tragedy.
As tributes continue to pour in for Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family, many Nigerians have taken to social media to express solidarity and prayers, consoling the family and sharing in their grief.
