Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most prominent son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed, according to sources close to the family, his lawyer Khaled el-Zaydi, and reports in Libyan media.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately known, and no official statement had been issued by Libyan authorities as of Tuesday.
Once a central figure in Libya’s political landscape, Saif al-Islam played a significant role in shaping government policy before the 2011 uprising that led to the overthrow and killing of his father.
However, his public presence faded in the years that followed as the country descended into prolonged instability.
In 2015, a Libyan court sentenced him to death in absentia over his alleged role in the violent suppression of protests during the revolution that ended his father’s four-decade rule.
Saif al-Islam was also wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity, a case his legal team was unable to have dismissed.
Despite his legal troubles, he re-emerged briefly in 2021 when he registered as a candidate in Libya’s planned presidential election. The vote was later postponed indefinitely amid deep political divisions and an ongoing power struggle.
