Kaweche Kaunda, one of the sons of Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda, has been found dead in a hotel room in Ndola, where he had travelled for business.
His elder brother, Panji Kaunda, confirmed the incident, stating that Kaweche was discovered unresponsive in his room early Thursday morning. He added that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Kaweche belonged to the influential Kaunda family, which has played a pivotal role in Zambia’s political history. He was known for his engagement in public affairs and for championing efforts to preserve the legacy of his father, who led Zambia to independence in 1964 and governed the country for 27 years.
Panji Kaunda, who currently serves as Zambia’s High Commissioner to Malawi, described the loss as devastating.
Meanwhile, Thabo Kawana, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Media, said details of the funeral arrangements will be announced once finalised.
