Farouk Ahmed has resigned as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) following corruption allegations raised by Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group.
Dangote had accused Ahmed of financial impropriety and requested the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter.
The resignation was confirmed in a statement by the Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday. The statement also revealed that Gbenga Komolafe has stepped down as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
In reaction to the allegations, Dangote had stated, “We have evidence of financial mismanagement that warrants immediate scrutiny.” Meanwhile, Ahmed described the claims as “wild and spurious” in a public response, defending his actions and integrity.
This development marks a significant shake-up in Nigeria’s petroleum regulatory sector, coming amid broader scrutiny of governance and transparency within the oil and gas industry.
Investigations by the ICPC are expected to provide further clarity on the matter.
