The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire incident that occurred on New Year’s Day at a ski resort in Switzerland, which claimed the lives of dozens of people and left several others injured.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who conveyed Nigeria’s heartfelt condolences following reports that the fire broke out in the early hours at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, one of Switzerland’s most exclusive resort destinations. The incident has since sent shockwaves across the international community, prompting an outpouring of sympathy and solidarity from governments and organisations around the world.
According to the statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, extended profound sympathies to the Government and people of Switzerland, as well as to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate tragedy.
The minister also expressed Nigeria’s deep concern for those who sustained injuries during the incident and wished them a speedy and full recovery. He noted that the thoughts of Nigerians are with the victims and their families as they navigate the pain and trauma caused by the devastating fire.
Ambassador Tuggar further reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Switzerland at this difficult time, stressing the importance of global compassion and cooperation in moments of tragedy. He emphasized that such incidents serve as a reminder of the shared humanity that binds nations together, regardless of geographical boundaries.
The statement added that the Government and people of Nigeria stand in unity with Switzerland as authorities continue investigations into the cause of the fire and efforts to support affected families and survivors.
Nigeria, the minister said, remains committed to fostering strong diplomatic ties with Switzerland and extends its prayers and moral support as the country mourns the tragic loss of lives resulting from the New Year’s Day incident.
