Zambia and Sweden have formalised a new framework for high-level political engagement, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultations aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
The agreement was signed in Stockholm on Tuesday by Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, and Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard.
Haimbe is visiting Sweden at the invitation of Stenergard, with both ministers holding the inaugural session of the newly established consultations shortly after the signing.
The MoU is expected to strengthen coordination on bilateral, regional, and global priorities, signalling a transition toward a more structured and results-driven partnership between the two countries.
Under the arrangement, the consultations will provide a platform to review ongoing cooperation, identify new areas for collaboration, and exchange views on key issues including development cooperation, trade, peace, and security.
Zambia and Sweden have maintained diplomatic relations since 1965, with Sweden regarded as one of Zambia’s longstanding development partners.
Swedish support has traditionally focused on governance, human rights, education, health, and gender equality, while both countries have recently intensified cooperation in climate action and green economic transition.
In recent years, the two nations have also shown a growing commitment to expanding ties beyond development assistance into broader political and economic engagement.
