The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a dramatic 1-0 victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final.
The decisive encounter, played on March 31 at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Mexico, saw the Leopards clinch their place in the global showpiece deep into extra time. Defender Axel Tuanzebe emerged as the unlikely hero, netting the winning goal in the 100th minute to seal a historic qualification.
The victory marks DR Congo’s return to the World Cup stage after a 52-year absence. Their only previous appearance came in 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire, making this achievement a landmark moment in the country’s football history.
DR Congo reached the tournament through the intercontinental playoff route, becoming one of Africa’s representatives in the newly expanded 48-team competition. Their qualification underscores a resurgence in African football, with the continent sending increased representation to the global tournament.
According to early tournament projections, DR Congo has been drawn into Group K, where they are expected to face Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan in the group stage.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking the first time the tournament will feature 48 teams.
