Ethiopian Airlines has finalised an agreement with Boeing Company to acquire six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, converting options from a previous order into firm commitments as part of the U.S. Finance Roadshow.
The deal marks a further deepening of the more than 80-year partnership between the two companies, reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines’ long-haul expansion strategy and enhancing connectivity between Africa, Asia and the United States.
By firming up the order, the airline is positioning itself to scale up intercontinental operations, with the incoming Dreamliners expected to serve both existing and new international routes while improving efficiency across its network.
The acquisition also cements Ethiopian Airlines’ status as the largest operator of the 787 Dreamliner in Africa, underscoring its continued investment in fleet modernisation and operational competitiveness within the global aviation market.
Beyond aviation, the agreement is seen as a strategic outcome of the U.S. Finance Roadshow, reflecting growing commercial, economic and technical ties between the United States and Ethiopia.
Industry observers say the move signals renewed confidence in Africa’s aviation growth trajectory, with Ethiopian Airlines leveraging modern aircraft technology to strengthen its role as a key gateway linking continents.
