South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday after co-hosts Canada snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory deep into stoppage time in their Round of 32 clash at Los Angeles Stadium.
Bafana Bafana appeared set to force the first knockout match of the tournament into extra time before Stephen Eustaquio produced a stunning late strike in the second minute of five minutes added on, firing home from outside the penalty area to send the hosts into the last 16.
The defeat brings an end to South Africa’s rather impressive journey in North America, despite a spirited performance that saw them create several promising chances, particularly in the opening stages of the encounter.
The South Africans began brightly, controlling spells of the game and coming close to breaking the deadlock on multiple occasions. However, they were repeatedly denied by poor finishing and Canada’s resilient defence.
As the match wore on, both teams struggled to find the decisive breakthrough, with extra time looking increasingly certain.
But just when penalties or an additional 30 minutes seemed inevitable, Eustaquio unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box that beat the South African goalkeeper and sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Bafana Bafana launched one final desperate push in search of an equaliser, but the Canadians held firm to seal a dramatic victory and book their place in the Round of 16.
South Africa’s elimination reduces the number of African nations still in contention at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup to eight as the knockout phase continues.
Canada, who finished second in their group and will play the remainder of the tournament away from home, will now face the winners of the Round of 32 fixture between the Netherlands and Morocco for a place in the quarter-finals.
