Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the construction of a flagship 24-Hour Economy Model Market in Juapong, North Tongu District, in a move aimed at stimulating economic growth, expanding local commerce, and creating sustainable employment opportunities in the Volta Region.
The groundbreaking ceremony formed part of President Mahama’s two-day “Resetting Ghana Tour” of the Volta Region, where he reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering transformative development projects across the country.
Speaking at the event on Thursday, Mahama described the proposed market as more than a conventional trading centre, saying it is designed to serve as a modern economic hub that will support farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
According to the President, the facility will feature essential infrastructure for storage, processing, packaging, distribution, digital commerce, and access to financial services, creating an integrated value chain that enhances productivity and market access.
Mahama said the project aligns with his government’s broader vision of driving inclusive economic development through strategic investments in critical sectors, including road infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, transportation, markets, and agro-industrial development.
He noted that Juapong’s strategic location and economic potential make it well-suited to become a major commercial and industrial hub within the Volta Region.
The Juapong Model Market is one of the flagship projects under Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy programme and has been classified as a Category Four Market—the highest designation within the initiative—underscoring its importance to the government’s plan to transform regional economies and promote round-the-clock economic activity.
The project is expected to strengthen local supply chains, attract investment, and generate employment while positioning the Volta Region as a key driver of Ghana’s economic expansion.
