A petition urging the United States government to impose visa restrictions on all high-ranking police officers and public office holders in Nigeria has amassed no fewer than 10,000 signatures as of Sunday afternoon.
The petition initiated by data journalist Farida Adamu on change.com seeks to ensure that top officials of the nation do not play deaf ears to critical issues that are inimical to the wellbeing of the average Nigerian.
The petition has so far amassed at least 10,000 signatures, a development that comes barely 48 hours after its initiation on Friday.
It would be recalled that the U.S. had in a statement last month revealed its decision to impose visa restrictions on some individuals for their roles in undermining democratic processes during the 2019 elections in Bayelsa and Edo States.
The US also warned that sanctions will be meted on politicians who sow conflict during the recently held elections in Ondo and Edo states.
Many Nigerians keep taking to the streets in protest of Police Brutality perpetuated by a tactical unit of the country’s police force known as the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.
Although President Buhari has assured Nigerians of his commitment to ensuring that the police are responsible to the people, critics believe his response is mere rhetoric and there is no end in sight for the ongoing protests.
