Aviation workers have shut down terminal two of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA2), Lagos State, leaving travellers grounded with flights suspended.
The aviation workers under the aegis of Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), it was learnt took positions at the strategic entrances leading to the terminal building as early as 6:00 am.
Heritage Times [HT] gathered that the workers took the action over “unprovoked termination” of the appointment of 34 aviation workers by the operators of the airport terminal, the B-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL).
They alleged that rather than implementing the conditions of service as agreed with them in 2021, the BASL management had resorted to sacking of its members.
The situation forced airlines like Ibom Air and Air Peace operating within the airport terminal to stop flight operations.
Ibom Air, in a notice to passengers, said the action of the union will greatly impact its flights scheduled in and out of Lagos today.
“We greatly regret the impact of this unexpected action on your day’s plans as we urge you to kindly stay close to all our communication channels for subsequent updates,” the airline said.
Meanwhile, authorities of the airport are yet to issue a statement on the development as of the time of filing this report.
