The archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya has said that England will no longer be the head of the global Anglican Church, following a shift in teaching that permits priests to wed same-sex couples.
According to Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, the Church’s position that homosexuality is a sin will not change.
He stated: “We will have a gathering of the Global South in Cairo, Egypt, in May. As we have previously declared and agreed, England will no longer serve as the Anglican Communion’s head.
“We will have another primate among us who will serve as the head of our communion, which is the communion that adheres to the orthodox teaching of the Bible, perhaps on a rotating basis.”
Last month, the Church of England supported initiatives to provide prayers of blessing for same-sex couples.
The Kenyan Anglican Church stated that its stance on gay marriage would not change and that same-sex couples would still be unable to get married in a Church.
Archbishops from 10 of the Anglican Communion’s 42 provinces have stated that they no longer see Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, as their leader.
