Elon Musk, the CEO of X, formerly known as Twitter, has revealed plans to eliminate the blocking feature on the platform, noting that it “made no sense”.
Musk clarified that users will still retain the ability to block individuals from sending them direct messages.
However, a number of individuals on various social media platforms have voiced concerns that this change could complicate efforts to expunge offensive content from their timelines.
This decision marks the latest in a sequence of modifications instituted by Mr. Musk since his acquisition of the platform in a substantial $44 billion transaction the preceding year.
Presently, when a user “blocks” an account, it halts the appearance of that account’s posts on the blocker’s timeline, and vice versa.
An account that has been blocked loses the capacity to transmit messages to the blocking party, and is also barred from accessing their posts.
Jack Dorsey, the original founder of Twitter, seemed to express concurrence with Musk’s resolution, stating: “100%. Mute only.”
However, apprehensions are being raised that simply muting an account might not sufficiently shield against instances of harassment, abuse, or stalking.
Currently, the mute function solely interrupts notifications pertaining to an account’s posts. A muted account can still access the muting party’s posts and respond to them.
One user characterized Musk’s determination as a “major misstep,” arguing that there exist “toxic individuals” on the platform whom users decidedly prefer not to engage with in any manner.
The elimination of the blocking feature could potentially run afoul of the terms and conditions stipulated by app stores like Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
Both platforms have prerequisites that demand social media apps to offer users tools for combatting harassment or bullying.
This alteration might render X ineligible for download from these platforms.
Should this policy proceed, it remains uncertain whether all the accounts that have been blocked would automatically become unblocked.
Nevertheless, users do possess the option to render their accounts private, thereby concealing their tweets from the general public and only permitting approved followers to access their posts.
