In recognition of the efforts of the Nigerian military, General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, has announced a substantial cash reward of N1 million ($605USD) for the troops involved in a recent high-profile operation in Zamfara State, Northeastern Nigeria.
The operation was pivotal in neutralizing a notorious bandit, Kachalla Buzu, also known by his alias Halilu Sububu, who had been a significant threat to regional security.
Heritage Times HT reports that the extensive operation, conducted last Thursday, was aimed at dismantling the criminal network that has been terrorizing Zamfara.
The crackdown resulted in the death of Sububu, a notorious bandit leader described by counter-insurgency expert ZagaZola Makama as the chief of Bello Turji, another high-profile criminal. Sububu, who was a native of Niger Republic, had taken refuge in the forests of Zamfara and was notorious for his violent activities and his control over illegal gold mining operations in the region.
General Musa’s visit to the state on Friday underscored the importance of the operation and the valor demonstrated by the troops. Addressing the soldiers, General Musa expressed his gratitude and admiration for their bravery. He stated, “Who are those ones that did the operation? I am giving you N1 million to go and share to show you that we appreciate you. You hear? Good.” This gesture not only serves as a token of appreciation but also aims to boost morale among the ranks.
The military’s success in this operation is seen as a major victory in the ongoing efforts to combat banditry and insecurity in the region. Sububu had been a persistent menace, frequently escaping to the Niger Republic after his criminal activities in Nigeria. His death marks a significant blow to the criminal networks operating in the area.
Sububu was also known for his control over various mining sites, particularly in Bagega and surrounding communities, where he exploited local resources for illicit gains. His criminal activities had been under intense scrutiny, leading to his declaration as a wanted individual by the Defence Headquarters earlier this year.
This operation and the subsequent reward highlight the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian military to address security challenges and reinforce their dedication to the safety and stability of the region.
