More than 400 surgeons from 25 African countries have received specialized training in minimally invasive surgery at IRCAD Africa, a cutting-edge medical facility in Rwanda.

This milestone was achieved through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and IRCAD France, which launched the center in October last year.
Surgeons from nations such as Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Namibia, and Ivory Coast were among the professionals trained at the facility.

The Rwandan government invested over $22 million in the construction of IRCAD Africa, which not only offers advanced surgical training but also conducts research in telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare.

Minimally invasive surgery, a procedure that uses small incisions, advanced cameras, and micro-instruments, has proven to reduce trauma, post-operative pain, and recovery time for patients, making it a transformative approach in modern medicine. This technique also minimizes complications such as infections and incisional hernias.

Director General for Clinical and Public Health Services Governance at Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Athanase Rukundo praised IRCAD Africa for equipping a new generation of African surgeons with cutting-edge techniques and technologies to improve patient care.
Speaking at the center’s one-year anniversary over the weekend, Dr. Guillaume Marescaux, Vice President of IRCAD Africa, expressed optimism for the future, stating, “This first year will only be the first page of a long successful story, where Rwanda will be remembered as the country that changed the vision of education and research for African surgeons.”

IRCAD Africa is also spearheading innovative initiatives such as the Disrumpere project, which aims to revolutionize diagnostics by integrating low-cost ultrasound devices with AI and robotics.

This project includes the development of a robotic ultrasound arm equipped with AI models, enabling remote operation and interpretation of medical results, thus expanding access to diagnostic care across the continent.

Meanwhile, President of IRCAD Africa, Dr. King Kayondo, emphasized the center’s mission to transform healthcare in Africa by making world-class surgical training and state-of-the-art technologies accessible to professionals across the region. Reflecting on the facility’s achievements.

“Over the past year, IRCAD Africa has reached significant milestones, including providing specialized training for surgeons, conducting groundbreaking research, and developing medical technologies tailored to the unique needs of African healthcare.”

IRCAD Africa highlight Rwanda’s commitment to elevating healthcare standards across the continent, with the center serving as a beacon of innovation and collaboration for African medical professionals.
