Sudan’s leader has accused “colonial powers” of instigating unrest across Africa, highlighting what he sees as external interference in the continent’s stability.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, made these comments during talks with Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The meeting took place at the presidential palace in Bissau, according to a statement issued by the council on Sunday.
The discussions between Burhan and Embalo focused on strengthening diplomatic relations and exploring broader areas of cooperation between their countries, the council’s statement noted.
Burhan also shared updates on Sudan’s ongoing crisis, describing the challenge posed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their rebellion against the nation’s institutions.
A Continental Shift
Burhan’s African tour coincided with a key victory for Sudan’s military forces, who recently regained control of Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira state, from RSF fighters.
“There are colonial powers working to fuel conflicts on the African continent,” Burhan said during the visit.
He pointed out that Africa is undergoing a pivotal transformation, saying, “Africa is now experiencing an awakening, giving it the strength to stand against external interference. We applaud the efforts of nations that have taken a stand against old and new forms of colonialism.”
Embalo, in response, voiced optimism for a resolution to Sudan’s crisis, expressing hopes for a peaceful outcome soon, according to the council’s statement.
Forging Alliances
Burhan’s stop in Guinea-Bissau was the second leg of a diplomatic mission that began in Mali. His itinerary also includes Sierra Leone and Senegal.
While in Mali, Burhan engaged in private discussions with Transitional President Assimi Goïta. The Sovereignty Council noted that these talks centered on deepening cooperation between Khartoum and Bamako.
“This visit is set to bolster shared interests and create stronger ties between the two nations,” Burhan remarked, as conveyed in the council’s statement.
He also emphasized the importance of solidarity among African nations, stating, “The nations of Africa are bound by a shared destiny, calling for unity and mutual support.” Burhan also commended Mali for its unwavering stance in support of Sudan.
