Egypt’s Parliament strongly rejected proposals to relocate Palestinians from their homeland on Monday, responding to calls from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Parliament issued a warning, stating that such plans pose a “grave threat” to the region’s security and stability.
Parliament Speaker Hanafi Gebali addressed the chamber, emphasizing that the Palestinian issue is not just a matter of land or population displacement, but a deeply rooted struggle for the Palestinian people’s historic and inalienable rights.
“We cannot ignore the serious danger posed by the proposals circulating about relocating Palestinians from their land,” Gebali stated. “These ideas completely ignore the fact that the Palestinian cause is about more than just territory or population—it is the struggle of a people fighting for their legitimate, historical rights.”
Gebali also underscored the historical and cultural significance of Palestine, asserting that the Palestinian people will never surrender their rights, nor will the Arab world stand by in silence.
“These proposals threaten not only Palestinian rights but regional stability as well. The only path to lasting peace is the two-state solution, where Palestinians can establish their independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, while ensuring security for all,” he added.
In the wake of Trump’s suggestion last Saturday to “clean out” Gaza and resettle Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan, Egypt, Jordan, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation united in rejecting any plans for Palestinian displacement.
Trump’s comments came in the aftermath of a ceasefire in Gaza that began on January 19, following Israel’s devastating war in the region, which has claimed over 47,000 Palestinian lives, predominantly women and children, and left over 111,000 injured.
The ongoing violence has resulted in a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale, with entire neighborhoods in Gaza destroyed and thousands of people still missing. This follows the issuance of arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court for Israeli leaders accused of war crimes in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions during the conflict.
Egypt has reiterated its commitment to defending Palestinian rights and opposing any attempts to erase or undermine the Palestinian cause.
