Kenya’s tourism sector achieved a significant milestone in 2024, attracting 7.5 million visitors, according to the latest statistics culled by AllAfrica.
This reflects a steady increase as the government sets its sights on welcoming 5 million international tourists and 10 million domestic travelers by 2027.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano shared that Kenya hosted 2.4 million international visitors last year, up from 2 million in 2023, highlighting a growth rate of 14.6%.
“Kenya’s tourism industry reached historic heights in 2024, with a total of 7.5 million visitors, including 2.4 million from abroad. This growth signifies the progress we’ve made,” Miano commented.
The top five tourism source countries, which include the United States, Uganda, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and India, were crucial in driving these numbers.
For instance, 306,501 visitors came from the United States, accounting for 12.8% of the total international arrivals among the top 5 markets.
Uganda and Tanzania also made notable contributions, with 225,559 and 203,290 arrivals, respectively.
Tourism continues to be a key revenue source for Kenya, ranking as the third-largest sector for foreign exchange. In 2024, the industry generated Sh452.2 billion, a significant increase from Sh352.6 billion in 2023.
“Visitors from Africa made up 40% of total arrivals in 2024, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) handling 67% of the total arrivals,” said the Tourism Research Institute.
Europe and the Americas followed with 28.1% and 15.7% of arrivals, respectively, while Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East contributed 12.1%, 1.3%, and 0.8%.
This growth is attributed to targeted government efforts aimed at boosting the tourism sector. Notably, in September 2024, the Ministries of Interior and Tourism signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance tourist safety.
