Chelsea’s historic triumph in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup took an unexpected twist after it was revealed that the team lifted a duplicate trophy during the post-match ceremony.
The original trophy was reportedly kept by U.S. President Donald Trump, who played a prominent role in the final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13.
Trump, who had lingered on the podium during the medal presentation and was booed by fans, later claimed the trophy was now “safely housed in the Oval Office,” sparking widespread criticism and disbelief.
FIFA officials confirmed that Chelsea was presented with an exact replica of the Club World Cup trophy after Trump refused to release the original.
Crafted by Tiffany & Co., the original was meant to be handed to Chelsea following their 3–0 win over PSG, but protocol was overridden when Trump took possession.
A source close to FIFA said, “We were caught off guard. The duplicate was prepared just in case, but it was never intended to be the main trophy.”
This incident has fuelled global backlash, with football fans and pundits calling it an embarrassing moment for the sport.
The event has raised concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States.
Critics say Trump’s actions have politicised a major international sporting event and tarnished what should have been a celebration for Chelsea.
On the other hand, Chelsea have not made an official complaint, but fans and former players have called for the immediate return of the original trophy. FIFA is expected to address the matter in the coming days.
