President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu on Monday bestowed national honours and life-changing rewards on Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their remarkable victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
During a reception at the State House in Abuja, the President conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players of the team.
Each player was also awarded a three-bedroom apartment and a cash prize of $100,000.
Members of the technical crew were not left out, with each receiving a $50,000 reward in recognition of their role in the team’s success.
Tinubu lauded the team’s incredible resilience and tactical brilliance throughout the tournament.
“The Super Falcons have lifted the spirit of our nation and proven, once again, that Nigeria is unstoppable when we stand united,” President Tinubu said. “Your resilience, skill and teamwork have brought honour to our country and inspired a new generation of young Nigerians.”
The ceremony was also attended by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President.
The team on Saturday came from 2-0 down in the first half to defeat WAFCON host Morocco 3-2 after a pulsating final clash in Rabat to guarantee 10th title for Nigeria.
