As Nigeria prepares for its forthcoming elections on Saturday, former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has called on all citizens to demonstrate patriotism, exercise their voting rights peacefully, and display true sportsmanship in choosing their preferred candidates.

In a statement issued by his office on Tuesday, Jonathan also urged political actors to shun violence, embrace moderation, and work towards consolidating the nation’s democratic gains.

Speaking directly to the country’s youth, the former president emphasized the importance of the electoral process in building a better future for Nigeria.

“The future belongs to you; do not allow yourselves to be used as agents of destruction and violence,” he said.

“Nigeria is yours to build. This election provides you with the opportunity to be key partners in the nation-building process by electing leaders of your choice; those you can hold to account, those you trust to defend your future and guarantee unity, peace, and prosperity in our great country.”

According to Jonathan, the 2023 election represents a significant moment for all Nigerians, and he urged them to exercise their power wisely, for the greater good of the country.

“Democracy has put our fate in our hands. It has given us power, the power to make the right choices, determine our future, and shape our destiny,” he said.

“I urge you all to make your respective choices in the best interest of our land. Let us make our choices peacefully and respect the choices and rights of others.”

The former President’s message comes at a crucial time, as the nation prepares for the elections.

His call for peaceful, patriotic, and democratic participation in the electoral process, serves as a reminder to all Nigerians of the need to work together for the greater good of the country, and to ensure a successful and peaceful election.
