President Donald Trump has ordered a “pause” in U.S. military assistance to Ukraine following a tense and reportedly disastrous meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.

The move comes as Trump seeks to pressure Zelenskyy into engaging in peace talks with Russia to end the ongoing war that began with Russia’s invasion more than three years ago.

A White House official revealed that Trump is prioritizing a peace agreement to resolve the conflict and is demanding Zelenskyy’s commitment to that goal. The official added that the U.S. is “pausing and reviewing” its military aid to ensure it is helping to facilitate a solution, but emphasized that this pause is not meant to permanently halt U.S. support.

Ahead of his 2024 campaign, Trump had repeatedly promised to swiftly end the war in Ukraine.

However, his frustration with Zelenskyy has grown, especially as the Ukrainian president expressed doubt that the conflict’s end is anywhere near.

Trump has voiced increasing confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ability to uphold a peace agreement if a truce is reached.

Earlier in the week, Trump criticized Zelenskyy for suggesting that the war’s end is still “very, very far away.” The strained relationship between the two leaders worsened after an earlier White House meeting, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance scolded Zelenskyy for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. support.

Amidst these tensions, Trump is also set to address Congress about the future of a U.S.-Ukraine agreement involving rare earth minerals, a deal now cast into doubt due to the recent friction.

Although Trump had previously declined to sign the deal, citing Zelenskyy’s lack of appreciation, he continues to praise the agreement as “great” and is expected to provide further details in his upcoming speech.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reassured British officials that the U.S. remains committed to negotiating an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, thanking the U.K. for its support in urging Europe to strengthen its defense efforts.
