A California court has awarded $19.25 million in damages against actor
Bill Cosby over allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman in the early 1970s.
Background of the Case
The lawsuit was filed by Donna Motsinger, now in her 80s, who testified that in 1972, Cosby offered her a drink containing a tablet she believed to be harmless.
Shortly afterward, she reported losing control of her body and slipping in and out of consciousness.
Motsinger said her memory of the incident remains fragmented, though she recalled flashes of events before later waking up at home with signs that she had been violated.
Cosby’s Response
Cosby, aged 88, denied the allegations. His legal team argued that Motsinger’s account lacks a clear recollection of events and asserted that no assault took place.
Attorney Jennifer Bonjean confirmed that Cosby plans to challenge the court’s verdict.
Damages and Pending Decisions
The $19.25 million relates specifically to damages determined by the court. A separate ruling on potential additional penalties is still pending.
Context of Allegations
This case is part of a long line of accusations against Cosby, whose public image was severely affected after dozens of women came forward with similar claims over several decades.
He has consistently denied wrongdoing, stating that his relationships were consensual.
In 2021, Cosby was released from prison after a prior conviction in Pennsylvania was overturned due to a legal technicality, nearly three years into his sentence.
